Matter & Case Management
Every file, every person, every step — in one structured place.
A matter is the unit of work in Law360. From the moment a file is opened, everything that touches it — the team, tasks, documents, time entries, billing, and correspondence — is anchored to that matter record. Practice area templates give each file a sensible starting structure, and per-matter access walls mean that only the assigned team can see the file, enforcing confidentiality without any manual administration. The matter timeline records what happened and when, so the story of a case is always clear.

Open a matter with a structured intake
Opening a matter captures the essential details — client, opposing party, practice area, responsible attorney, and billing arrangement — in a structured form rather than a blank page. Auto-assigned matter numbers keep the register clean, and required fields prevent a file from being opened with critical information missing.
Classify by matter type and practice area
Matter types and practice areas organise your caseload and drive default templates. A litigation matter loads a different task checklist and timeline than a conveyancing or corporate advisory file, so the structure fits the work from day one.
Track status from intake to closed
Each matter moves through defined statuses — Open, Active, Pending, Closed — with the current status visible at a glance on the register. Filtering by status lets partners see the active caseload, identify files that have stalled, and archive completed matters without losing the record.
Build the matter team and control access
Add the responsible attorney, co-counsel, paralegals, and clerks to the matter team, each with a role that determines what they can see and do. Per-matter walls mean a fee earner not on the team cannot open the file — not even to browse — so client confidentiality is enforced automatically rather than relied upon.
Manage tasks and milestones
Break the matter’s work into tasks with owners, due dates, and priorities. Tasks roll up into the firm-wide calendar so workloads are visible, and completed tasks build the matter record that tells the story of the file.
Follow the matter timeline
A chronological timeline records every event that touches the matter — file opened, documents added, time entries logged, hearings attended, notes made — giving the team an authoritative audit trail and new team members instant context on where things stand.
Record notes and correspondence
Capture file notes, meeting summaries, and correspondence directly on the matter so that everything is in one place. Notes are time-stamped and attributed to their author, making them part of the permanent record.
Close and archive matters cleanly
Closing a matter runs a checklist — outstanding time billed, documents filed, trust funds settled — so nothing is left hanging. Closed matters remain fully searchable and readable, giving the firm a permanent archive without cluttering the active caseload.
